Again. To back track a bit. Last summer, a FRIEND of mine sat down at Gator City as we discussed this year's election and the potential people. I swore that Weiss would be the man and that Moseley would be all eye candy. She insisted that Ryan was the man of the future. When asked about the idea of E.J. Walicki running, well she said he would make a great Treasurer. Well, she turned out right. But only after she railed against her boyfriends underage neighbors, who were hitting on him. She had them thrown out. Anyway. It's election night for the 2007 SG Elections. Spinal Tech is here and the Alligator Girls look like they are comfy in their chairs in the O+B. Some new R+B is on with Spinal Tech and I have local Gainesville products Chris McCarty Band, blaring. Gatorman misses Swamp Pundette, Reitz Rambler, and UFGDI and many others.

9:42 Working on my homework, listening to We Didn't Start the Fire overlaid with music from the UF Swing Club. The Alligator Girls have multiplied. I am not sure how they rate to the reigning Alligator Beauty, the Always Fab Bridget Carey.

9:45 No sign of Christian Duque. Does he dare show his face on election night?

9:47 Voter Tally Prediction, random number generator says 7666.

9:53 Random People enjoying their coffee and the music. CMB makes a comeback as I wait as the music has turned awful. Possibly haven't heard music this bad since I heard drunken people at the Swamp sing Piano Man.

10:02 It looks like the Alligator Girls might be trying to learn how to use "Blogger." Not sure, not that interested. Feel bad for the large amounts of studiers in the O+B.
Also looks like there is a juggler on the 3rd Floor. I kid you not, a juggler on a non Gator Nights evening.

10:07 Rumors are floating that the Department of Housing is going to throw a huge party and allow the residents to drink for a night with no punishments if E.J. wins.

10:40 It's empty but the Swing Club is still going. The Alligator People have multiplied. Where are the Warren's and the Bridget's? Sigh.... I feel like Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon. I promise this is my last one.

10:42 I wonder if the people sleeping in the Reitz Union Hotel will think it's weird that 200 students are going to descend upon the Union in 45 minutes.

10:45 Happy Birthday to the Alligator People.

10:49 The Swing Club is leaving for the Night. The Spinal Tech people are blasting the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Talk about a party with many faces.

10:50 Early Predictions: Gator sweeps everything except some small college. E.J. is the highest vote getter even above Ryan and Vanessa.

11:00 Still no drunken people from the Swamp. Somehow, I don't see people getting overly excited about this election like the last 3. My prediction is that Pants Party shows up without Pants.

11:13 Bring Sexy Back? It seems more than likely that Gatorman's readers will remember a contest held at the end of Spring Semester last year. In that contest, two of our SG hopefuls, Ryan and E.J., were in the contest. Neither did that great. Shows what Gatorman's readers know.

11:20 It is reported on the Alligator Live Blog that the Swamp has 40 supporters crowding around the bar. The question then becomes where are the Pants Party People. Duds and Suds? The Top? The Atlantic? Hmmm

11:21 I see 3 Pants Supporters. But they seem to be leaving. Oh well. At least this is a nicer night than last time.

11:26 At least 10-15 voices are coming. I here them.

11:30 My roommate's dream girl, Lacey Logsdon, and a Gatorman Maxim Contest Girl is here.

11:31 E.J.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11:39 Gatorman doesn't get the courtsey visits from candidates, but he does see the Pants Flag flying high. Promiscusus Boy is on the Stereo. Tommy Jardon is that you? Let's see who mugs for the camera come announcement time.

11:43 It seems that Eve? was in the O+B with her parents. If that was her, I might have found a new SG crush. Move over Miss Cosimi.

11:44 A major question just happened: Why are we here? Let's be honest! I agree go home you are blocking my view of the better looking people.

11:45 John Mayer "Waiting on the World To Change." Somehow I think the Spinal Tech people are pants supporters.

11:46 Blood Alcohol Content while increasing does not seem to be changing much.

11:47 The Alligator is reporting a total vote of 7692. Pretty damn close by Gatorman. Kevin Reilly smoking and drinking a bud light as he talks with a Pants supporter and a Gator Party member.

11:53 Pretty quiet and uneventful. Sigh.

11:57 Gatorman gets a visit from E.J. as he heads up to the front. The front is not for me. I hope no problems this year with the election recount.

11:58 Some old people are blocking my view.

12:00 John Boyles is here. I think. At least it looks like him. Ahh the memories of when John was a youngin'.

12:02 GO GATOOOOOOOOOOOORS!!!!!! Cheer!! Pretty Mild. Still no Glenda.

12:03 Brian Augunst is on the stage. Mild speech. Smooth sailing, Thanks to the Ass Election Commissioners.

12:04 Constitutional Amendment Passes, Renewable Energy Passes 78% of the Vote, Homeless Shelter Fails 35%, the Homeless are screwed over again.

12:05 Grad-1 Pants, Gator, Gator, Gator, Gator, Gator, Gator. Oh well, Go Gators !!!!!!!!!
MOSELEY!!! MOSELEY!!!! MOSELEY!!!!!!!
VANESSA is drowned out by everyone!!!!!!!
E.J!!!!!!!! Thanks the Pants Party!!!

Hopefully they will let Bruce speak....
Oh well it ends. Start your engines for 2008 and 2009 NOW. Agrusa, Reilly, Hardwick, Walicki, Logsdon, Asher? Get to it!!!!

P.S. Just to comment on something stupid like the I voted stickers being given out. I am a firm believer in the only way that Indies win is two things: 1) Qualified, Popular Candidates. 2) A high Voter Turnout!!!! Supressing the Vote doesn't help anyone but the Greeks. Sigh.

12:15 I am calling it a Night. Expect Links, editing, and other stuff tommorrow night.

Freshman Drinking Game

Well I normally don't condone massive consumption of alcohol.. having had the opportunity to go out a few times this summer, I know this would have made summer a lot more fun.

Freshman Drinking Game

My apologies

Well it's been a week and I haven't updated here. Well, I am exhausted. No I really am. I am so tired that typing hurts. Moved on Sunday to a new location, moved from friend to friend for a night to sleep. Oh and a new job that ensured that I leave at 6:30 am and return at 9:30, desperately needing sleep.

I have some of the contest done. I am trying to get it done. To the person, whose computer I downloaded a photo to send it to me. You know you will read this before you will read your e-mail.

A quick thought for all those out there. Continue to improve the life of the people around you, I promise that it will be worth it.

And the winner is...

Senator Cullin. The arm candy in the picture paid off. Senator Cullin dominated this round similar to the way Senator Asher did in the first round.

Senator Logsdon pulled off an impressive second place finish as well. The arm candy pays off.

The last and final round will go up soon.

Just in case you cared, the overall rankings have a tie for 1st place (can't tell you who though). The 6th place person is only 2.5 overall points from the lead though, so anything can happen.

Make sure you vote.

Appearances

I won't talk about the Alligator articles about SG, some of them make sense. Some of them seem angry is the best word for it. But in today's editorial, we have a laural going to John Boyles for if nothing else appearances.

Now, I really ask you is going to kill John to have these forums? To make the process as open as possible, nope and while getting a bit of sarcasm, he is still getting laural for all his hard work. See folks, something as simple as that makes the open government people happy.

What would be realy interesting is coming fall and spring elections if the political parties would allow a reporter in to observe the proceedings.

Oh on another note, the gainesville city commission is trying to get the state to approve instant run-off voting.

For those of you that don't, instant run-offs work like this. Candidate A receives 45%, Canidate B 40%, and Candidate C receives 15%. Now, normally we would hold a run-off election a week or two later to see who will win and get the majority. With instant run-offs you rank the people in order. So maybe 12% of the 15% for Candidate C ranked Candidate B as their 2nd favorite and Candidate A ranked 2nd with 3%. Well, no need to wait that extra week. We declare the winner right then and there.

While I know Brian Aungst, Superviser of Elections, will go against the will of the people and not use internet voting, but he should explore instant run-offs as a cost saving measure. Yes, that does mean documents need to be re-written, but think of the money, time, and energy for everybody that is saved. Even if we did the "Secured" site voting, instant run off is still better.

Athletes and Facebook

Go vote.

I had meant to talk about the idiotic athletes that photograph their hazing rituals and then they end up on Badjocks.com. Most of these started invesitgations into the hazing incidents at their schools. I was always proud though that UF athletes were smart enough to know not to put that kinda stuff up.

While celebrating a birthday, two friends borrowed my camera and had a picture taken with an athlete. This athlete was below 21 and definitely drinking. When looking at the photos though, I was smart enough to know not to put that up on this website, as I felt that would do the player's and the school's rep harm. We have all seen many of under 21 basketball players enjoying shots at Swamp, XS, or whatever bar they get into that night.

Again, while I don't expect, these guys to be perfect. On some level I do expect them to be role models as they are student leaders (just in a different field than SG). I even expect SG student leaders to not encourage underage drinking by buying shots (new senator or not). Call me old fashion, call me a putz, but you can't say we are helping the admin in lowering student drinking and at the same time buy a round for the Summer B Freshman.

So recently, the Alligator exposed several athletes for their facebook profiles. Now most of these guys I never even heard of with Ryan Lochte being the exception. I just want them to realize that more than the average student, they are held to a higher standard with regard to conduct. Unfortunately, Tuesday's letter (once again) blames the media for doing its job, underage drinking, getting high, and public urination are not approriate. I am sure there is more than one lecture that these students receive during their time here at UF. Is it fair that these are small sport athletes (cross-country and swimming)? Sure. If there was picture of Noah sipping from a Grey Goose bottle, I hope Billy Donovan would kick Noah's ass for putting himself in that situation. Similarly with Leak and Meyer.

A Win for Students

First scroll down and vote for your favorite stylish lady. Votes due Thursday at 5pm.

It doesn't often happen, but occasionally, students win and Bernie loses. Honestly, the story about CLO goes back about 6 months. I won't recap the whole thing, but it is easy to say that Bernie wanted to shut down one of the lowest cost places to live in Gainesville due to safety concerns. Safety concerns that were going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, were fixed for a fraction of that. CLO said UF had a conflict of interest.

Now, the university is no longer the trustee and CLO and its Alumni Foundation is now in charge. This is a win-win for everybody. The university no longer has the potential liability on them. The students get to keep their Co-Op and low rent. It works out for everyone. The university no longer looks like the bad guy for trying to shut down the poor students house and profit off the land.

Great job to a decidated group of Alumni who found meaning in a small piece of their college life. On some level, all groups should have as a dedicated alumni.

Ladies Night

SEND VOTES TO GATORMAN-UF@HOTMAIL.COM

Vote due Thursday at 5pm.

Gatorman has sadly received no bribe offers for additional points for the chosen contestant. Anything and everything that we don't want to see Gavin Baker or J. Clay Brett dressed in. (And if you have seen them in one of these, you have my deepest regrets)

The ladies have pulled out the best they could find in this round using a past SG Playboy winner, a possible Student Body President candidate, and the current Student Body President. We have fraternity formals, and just plain formals. We have beautiful shots at the fountains of UF.

Gatorman has favorites in this contest, so I will not be saying other than there names.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; He still is cool.

Condi Rice
Umm, really any high ranking official would be cool, but Condi fills so many demographics (politician, black, female, republican). I just want her here. Even if I would never vote for her.

Rudy Guiliani
Basically, the same reason as Condi. His fame is real far down though, so maybe the cultural plaza instead of the O'Dome

Oprah
Having been home for the last few weeks, I have realized that Oprah is more important than the rest of the world.

Seth McFarlane
I think ACCENT tried to get him to come last year, but something fell through. Anyway, he still kicks ass. Family Guy Creator.

Gale Lemerand
Really just so I could throw rotten veggies at him. No other reason is necessary.

Oh is it possible that SGP could help sponsor the Tom Petty concert. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying make it free, but maybe 5 bucks off. Oh and can we bring the Boss to Gainesvegas please!!!! I would be so happy if that could happen.

Oh check over on the NAGAS site for more.... ummm... interesting news.

Noah Road

Well if you read the Alligator on Thursday you might have seen the article about Joakim Noah Road. While I don't necessarily think naming a road after Mr. Noah is the best thing in the world, UF has had worse ideas. Namely, Gale Lemerand Drive. Seriously, I have said it before, but this man did nothing for our school. He already has a building named after him, but he needed a freaking road as well?

In a Gainesville Sun article, they outline some of the hurdles.

---Police and Fire Departments would have to change all addresses on the road (no biggie).

---Convince the University and a Faculty Committee it is a worthy endeavor. (Hmmm, we can name anything after huge donors, but nothing after a student).

---Pass muster with the Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, and State Legistlature because well, Noah is still living. Hmm, Gale Lemerand is still living, what's the difference? As is Riker, Pugh, and McGuire (some of the most recent buildings on campus) shouldn't be that hard.

Now do I really take this campaign seriously? Not really, but I applaud the mastermind, Zach Huddleston. Seriously, I really do. This is one of those small things that UF can do that would make UF students realize that we matter. Perhaps, instead of Noah it should be Gator Boyz Road (as it was a team effort) or something.

Oh, on a somewhat serious note, can Stadium Drive be renamed Mr. 2 Bits Lane? Seriously, I mean at least he has done something for UF, even if it is only 6 days a year. He brings more hope, joy, and entertainment to UF Fans then Gale Lemerand does.

Oh just to further prove why Gale Lemerand is evil. He also has an auditorum named after him at Emry-Riddle, and a Center at Daytona Beach Community College. The man just randomly gives money to universities. This man must be stopped.

I'm comin' up so you better get this party started

First, send all votes to
gatorman-uf@hotmail.com

Second, the winner of round 1 was Senator Asher. For those of you who saw some information leaked to you through the Senagator (Gatorman vows to find and fire the person that leaked this information to the Senagator), while Senator Asher stayed in first, many if not all the rankings changed.

Asher's Army of fans ensured her a victory with 42% of the 1st place vote. In order to keep the suspense of future weeks, I will be revealing only the winner each week.

Third, you can throw out the points from last week, because now we start a new week of points. Everything starts at zero.

Fourth, this round is about a night out. I asked the ladies to send a photo that was a house party, themed party, or just a rockin' good party. Needless to say these ladies responded. Why a night out round? Well, as an SGer in leadership, you need to have a flair. An eyecatcher. Remember it is not the hair, the abs, or the gun show that these ladies put on,

Votes are due by July 20th at 5 pm That is all.

Senator Cullin off someplace beautiful I suppose. Anyway, Gatorman is always a fan of a good pair of jeans. A slight more turn and we might be seeing Miss Cullin in a country music video(3rd song down). A Solo cup is always a neccessary accessory for a house party.

Senator Logsdon in a canary yellow dress. Honestly, she looks good in the photo. I believe the photo is from Lacey at the Cape. If you don't know about the Cape, here it is captured in lyrics.

Senator Asher look stunning in a red dress. This reminds me of my dad's favorite song growing up. Celebrating her 20th birthday, let us see if Senator Asher can repeat last week's win.

Senator Dale looking fantastic in the black top and jeans. Really that's all there needs to be said.

Our first themed party contestant. Miss Carey looks great. I mean obviously she adores superheroes (Guys what's more styling than that?). Plus raising a pint to Bernie Machen is always a good idea. Perhaps, she was casting for a spot in this movie or perhaps for the role in gatorman's life.

Senator Ho looking fantastic in pink. I mean she walks into your house, how is your attention not drawn to her.

Senator Silva trying to beat out Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean. OK, it's hard to beat out the rail thin Keira Knightly, but Senator Silva might have a chance.

Finally, Senator Bainer. Just simply beautiful. That's is all.

Gator Growl

So, in order to allow people to discuss issues a little bit more I figured I would try and post once a day for now on. Tommorrow, you will see Round 2, if I get in one photo, if not I will take the top facebook photo.

Anyway, Gator Growl has been mentioned a couple of times and even received a Laural from the Editorial Board in the Alligator. Do I know either of these comedians? nope! Did I know Dane Cook? Nope, but he was fantastic.

I don't necessarily agree that the headliners have been horrible. Wayne Brady was good, not great. Bill Engvall was ok, but not good. Sugar Ray was horrible. Bill Cosby was fantastic and of course Jim Bruer was horrible, probably the worst ever that Gator Growl has ever seen.

So what do I think of Jim Gaffigan and Gabriel Iglesias as the comedians. I am fine with it. Honestly, I think that the same students that would go if it was Brady, Engvall, or Bruer will go. There are just certain students that go no matter what. Honestly, I think the skits are the best part of the show and look forward more to them then I do the comedians (even if they are the same jokes year after year). And of course, the fireworks, everyone loves ashes falling on them to see the pretty colors. But if the fireworks aren't there, damn the comedians.

Wisdom 4: 7-13

So, every now and then, we as individuals need to take stock of our lives. Unfortunately, it is only after something drastic happens that we choose to do this. It reminds us that our lives are too short. It matters not when we shall die, but how we shall live.

Our lives are too short for grudges, tiffs, spats, and anger. Our lives should be filled with love and laughter and not of the bickering and animosity that fills us at times. Sometimes it takes the loss of a dear departed loved one for us to realize this.

While the whether is beautiful out, I encourage everyone to find that person you have long held a silent grudge against and offer your own apologies. I encourage you all to find your friends and spend time with them. Do not go back to just your best friends, but all of them. Call, write, or visit, but make sure they know you care.

Finally, Carpe Diem. Make the most out of each day. In our days, there are so many lives that we have the opportunity to touch, the opportunity to improve, the opportunity to save. Wake up each morning and make sure that your goal is to improve the community and lives everywhere you go as many a person before you has done.

Idea

Continue to vote....

Update: Gainesville Story about how students will be screwed here

I happen to turn on the TV and see John Boyles speaking at the Gainesville City Commission about the upcoming Student in Single Family Neighborhoods ordinances. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the Gainesville residents idea that students are the worse thing in the world makes me upset. As on campus resident, I had to put with the noise coming from their constant BBQs on gameday. I had to deal with the fact that as employees they get closer parking than I did as "resident" on everyday basis. But what does this all mean?

Lobby Coordinator Lutin offered to the city commission a proposal that SG had. I hope that Lutin and SG will put his ideas up on the SG website. This is an example of SG using the website for good.

When I talk of SG opening up to the students, yes, there is the idea of "promised" positions, etc that need to stop. But since, there is a more general idea of opening up SG as well. Opening up information as well. If SG can show students through small things what it is doing for them. It helps to dispel the notion that cabinet directors/Secretaries are people doing nothing. In publishing the reports or listing their programs, students have a better idea of what is going on a minimal of expense.

Congratulations on our Executives trying to stick up for student rights. But they can't do it alone. They need our help. Not just SGers, but the same flunkies that we get out to vote each session.

I think that is something we all can agree on

Swamp Photos

SEND ALL VOTES TO
GATORMAN-UF@hotmail.com

This contest is a little different than the guys. No offense to the ladies, but with guys it's all about the suit and tie and a couple of other things. With the ladies, I believe they have different styles for so many different occasions that I don't think I could name them all. But since these are important female leaders on our campus, I have decided (with the help from two of the contestants (Lacey and Kellie, thank you)) to have several a broad range of categories that I believe will highlight their uniques styles.

First up is the Swamp, with the guys, it was mostly about the jackets, the button downs, and the ties. With these beautiful young ladies, well it's more varied. Much more varied. Remember as with the guys, it's not about the hair, the unbelieve abs, or the dimples, but rather the style. You are ranking the style of these young ladies.

Second, remember to rank all 8 young ladies in an e-mail to me (gatorman-uf@hotmail.com) or in the comments if you have a handle.

Third, the rules are here.

Fourth, I don't know the young ladies that well so don't expect me to comment a lot. Also I don't know ladies fashion that well in describing things, so I apologize if it is not exactly right.

Finally, Gatorman is going on a mini-vacation for a couple of days.

1) Christine Bainer--- Senator from Journalism College. The beautiful blonde in the middle of the picture. Canary Yellow top with a large watch/jewlery and a winning smile.

2) Priscilia Silva--- Engineering Senator and member of the Women's Engineering Society. Fashionable glasses and pearls, always a must for ladies at the Swamp.

3) Anna Ho --- Senator from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Active member of AASU. The body position has the model look, has the glasses and a nice blue top.

4) Bridget Carey--- Editor of the The Alligator. Sure, she might not be SG "officially", but it's my contest. She deals with SG players as much as everyone and honestly, if I was in SG, I would gladly have to deal with her. Anyway enough crushes, Gatorman is always a fan of Gators and a good pair of jeans.

5) Kellie Dale - Senator of Beaty Towers. Young socialite who loves Swamp. Member of the Allocations committee. In all of her pictures she has s nice glow to her face as if she actually is enjoying herself. Gatorman is always hesitant on pink, but believes it look good.

6) Lauren Asher- District A Senator and Chairwomen of the Information and Communication Committee. I have much respect for Miss Asher from some of her quotes in the paper recently. My favorite can be found at the bottom of this Gainesville Sun article. At least it shows that she wants to try and reach out to the students, kudos to you. Perhaps a photo with the Alligator Editor Carey? Anways, a lacy print and hot jeans. Always draws attention.

7) Lacey Logsdon---Senator from District C and member of the Budget committee. First, when you think styling right now, basically everything 80s is in. I am just waiting for the Madonna jelly bracelets to make a come back. But anway, Lacey is seen here styling for a "Pink Polos and Popped Collars" Night hosted by former Senate President John Hooker. I do believe she might have a double popped collar in the photo even. Gatorman is also a fan of jean skirts.

8) Ally Cullin--- Senator from District D. She's important, nuf said. A toast at swamp, classic. A bit more formal, but still styling. Sun Glasses, light blue, a moment to be remembered. All is well in Swamp.

One Thought for the Day:

Gatorman is feeling very old today. I won't comment on that right now, but I do think it is odd that the Alligator (the paper that numerous people bash) makes no mention of the possible resignation (like numerous people thought it would). The Gainesville Sun, though, even says that there are rumors on the student blogs. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't at Senate, so maybe a Senator asked Vice President Washington in direct connection to the blogs so maybe that's where they got the information, but I am liking the idea of people using the blogs as sources, as sketchy as we maybe for being anonymous.

Keep reading down for more information on the SG Style Contest

Gatorman Presents...

Finally it's here, the long awaited, much anticipated contest, that has had everyone on pins and needles. That's right it is SG Women of Style.

First, the Rules.

1) There are 9 Beautiful and Stylish young women competing in this contest. They all agreed to particpate in the contest after they had been nominated. They sent all their photos in, so Gatorman doesn't want to hear she has a better pictures out there.

2) Of the 9, you must rank in an e-mail to gatorman-uf@hotmail.com all 9 young ladies. No votes will be counted unless they rank all nine. If you have a blogger name and wish to post your votes in the comments section that is more than allowed (Rebel Jew and Virgil, both did this last contest).

3) If you vote for one of the young ladies for first place, they get 5 points, a second pace get 4, a third get 3.5, fourth gets 3, fifth gets 2.5, sixth gets 2.0, seventh gets 1.5, eigth gets 1.0, and ninth gets .5.

4) I will add up all the votes and see who the winner is for the round and for the round they will get the above points for their place.

5) There are 4 rounds (Swamp, Night Out, Lady Wear, Random). The Random Round will count as 1.5 points. So 1st place is worth 7.5 points and on down. The reason is to add some excitement to the final round to show off their personality that the other photos just can't capture.

6) Gatorman is open to bribes (he will accept shots and pitchers at the Swamp for starters).
(All Ladies look away at this point):

Boyfriends and potential Boyfriends, I will gladly relate what you are willingness to bribe the judge if that gives you brownie points.

(Ladies you can look again)

7) Gatorman will not tolerate ANY negative postings in this contest. I have never deleted a post unless the author of the post asked me to. I will for this. These young ladies deserve more than harsh comments.

8) Finally, Enjoy yourselves. I thank you all for your time and patience during this.

Hopefully, the first round of photos will go up tommorrow.

G-Man

CITF Funds

So, I wanted to talk a bit about the CITF Funds a bit. These are funds that come every few 3-5 years available for campus improvements. Normally, they are spent on big ticket improvements and have helped fund several advances in the Reitz Union.

Last year, Joey G moved about 1.5 million dollars (probably under pressure from UF Administration from the Bandshell to the Reitz Union). I generally think this was a bad move. Our student union continues to be a good state and I don't necessarily think the use of 1.5 million is necessary there. But I am willing to live with it. What I can't understand is that we are almost a year later and there are still no actual plans for the use of the money.

Of course there has been talk of updating the Rion Ballroom, updating the 3rd floor, and giving infrastructure changes that are necessary, but will no plans.

Meanwhile, the bandshell still waits... and waits... and waits... for something. Don't get me wrong, safety first and all. I completely understand and nor do I want UF or SG to throw money at something with no purpose. But, can it really cost 1.5 million dollars just rebuild a permanent stage and a roof for starters. Let's worry about everything else that is need much later. We don't need the huge bathrooms and technical equipment yet, let's get the outdoor stage and roof set.

I don't know, I enjoy seeing these outdoor shows and wish SGP did more of them instead of the O'Dome.

Oh well... enjoy the 4th.

Fireworks

Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.

Don't shoot the messenger

As I was up late watching Keith Olbermann's the Countdown, I realized something. We hate the media. As a public "anything," we hate the media. The media can do no right.

For example, in the 1990s, Democrats hated the media and the media's constant talk of President Clinton and his wandering willie. They hated the fact that every day, they had to stand up and defend the leader of their nation and their party from the vileness that people would throw at him and his family. Critics would yell liar and other horrible things. They would belittle him constantly for no reason other than he had a different party affliation next to his name. They thought that he was harming the country to point where we were doomed.....

Since 2000, the Republicans hate the media and the media's constant talk of President Bush and his wandering army and roving searches. They hate the fact that every day, they have to stand up and defend the leader of their nation and their party from the vileness that people would throw at him and his family. Critics would yell liar and other horrible things. They would belittle him constantly for no reasong other than he had a different party affliation next to his name. They thought that he was harming the country to point where we were doomed.....

While nobody is going to name scholarships or awards after me, and I certainly did not change the face of any organization I was in, I learned a lot during my time as an executive board member. The number one thing I learned from my President was that listening is an important tool. Listening to what people thought about me, my executive board members, and my organization was the most important thing I can do as a leader.

We would actively seek out information from our members and seek to improve their experience in the organization. We would ask them to reflect upon our organization. No comment was meaningless. After gathering the comments, we would try to be defensive about what happened, but rather we would then sit and try to think why a person might say that. What have I done for others to think that way about me and my organization.

From this information, we would seek to improve our organization and our own actions. If one of us was constantly slow in returning communications, we made a group effort to make sure that the person did better. We wanted our organization to be the best, not just for our sakes, but for those that were members, and the numerous others that would have the opportunity to indirectly feel what we accomplished.

The most important thing though was we asked Why might people think this way....

In our national government, our leaders fail to often ask the question why might a person label the Democrats as socialists, who disdain work and responsibility, couldn't put in a hard day's work, would rather save some rodent that spreads disease than spread prosperity. Republicans as church going nut jobs who would sell their mothers if it meant that Halliburton or Ambramoff got another million.

Often these leaders, blame the media. You see it in the most recent stories about President Bush and the release of news about tracking of International banks. Bush blames the media. The secret prisons in Europe, blame the media. The NSA wiretapping, blame the media. Hell, Valerie Plame-gate, the media's fault.

But the political question that should be asked is simple, why do people think this way when looking at our party or our organization?

Relating this to SG (finally), I am quite saddened how quickly we learn to blame the media. SG says the Alligator harbors unfair grudges against them. That the Alligator will blame SG/Greeks for everything no matter what they do, so why bother trying to please them (by answering questions or opening up what they are doing). They have started taking the idea to the blogs, now as well. "The blogs are horrible places, they are anonymous, and they are not to be taken seriously"" are the ideas flowing from our leaders (on all levels).

If you want to see what I am talking look at this past Banquet, where the former execs were mad at the Alligator and The Alligator is mad that the SG. Now, the approriate question, should be to ask by both sides, "why are they mad at us?"

For SG, it could be the pulling of advertising funding by SG Agencies, the silent treatment from all Exec Board members, or the thousands of dollars that they spent on the banquet.
For the Alligator, it could be that you missed an opportunity to foster in a new era of openness. That this day is possibly one of the most important symbolic days of the year in SG (besides elections) and you missed it.

I will not defend nasty comments (somehow people believe they can turn on a computer and become uncivil) or complete inaccuracies of the blogs, I do my fair share of joking and commenting about SGers. Does this mean that my ideas are any less valid than another student's? I hope not. But SGers should be looking at the comments, no matter how random or anonymous and simply think Why Might People Be Thinking This Way?

The Summer B Freshman Are Coming! The Summer B Freshman Are Coming!

Think of me as the modern day, Paul Revere ( or William Dawes or Dr. Joseph Warren). But anyway, the freshman are here. Soon they will pounce all about Gainesville. They will have their freshly minted fake IDs. The ladies will have enough make-up on to make a 13th Street Prostitute blush, just to try to be that elusive 21. The guys will pad their wallets, trying to bribe the bouncers, bartenders, or "friends" that have will be trying to get them some drinks.

Ahhh, the Summer B Freshman are coming!!!!!

Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe's, and Publix will be emptied out of supplies over the next week. 5 star and Domino's will fill a bunch of new orders. And mothers and fathers will be decked out in orange and blue, but forget to remember that they should try not to embarass their kids.

You will see hundreds of kids walking around campus with maps in hands asking you where Turlington is as they stand in Turlington Plaza, in front of the sign that says TURLINGTON!!!

The Summer B Freshman are coming!!!!!

The young ladies, who innocently have never seen the inside of a frat house, will be offered free tours, but no tour is free ladies. These same ladies will take their first walk of shame through the frat house the next day, across campus, and through the dorms.

The Summer B Freshman are coming!!!!!!

For those of us, who have enjoyed getting tables at every bar in town without having to wait, well that is over. Forget it. If you even see a bar that will be amazing.

The Summer B Freshman are coming!!!!!!!

Finally, remove the coolness, style, and the looks from Matthew McConaughey's David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused and you have every creepy guy's quote for the next 6 weeks. "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age"

The Summer B Freshman are coming!!!!!!!!!! Now LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so excited

So, I have had some free time during the last few weeks. While I have always known that Television had gone down the drain, I don't think I realized how much until recently. I mean, seriously, the only thing good on is the World Cup and re-runs of shows from the early 90s.

I remember 80s and 90s TV show, sure they were somewhat lame. They always had some sort of message though. Something about the importance of family, friends, school, community. Something that challenged snorting drugs, getting drunk, or stealing. Every episode ended with the family and friends getting along and another week would pass as if nothing extraordinary happened (as if they were all in denial).

Well, the 24 Hour Study Center and a couple of comments about it got me thinking about how are SG leaders do it. Obviously some of them aren't able to but most of them are. But how do they do it? They drink coffee, lots of it, and some take Adderall to help them study.

So as Summer A comes to a close and many will no longer be taking classes until Fall. I dedicate this post to you. And all of those you that "need more time" to get everything done.
