Noah Road

Well if you read the Alligator on Thursday you might have seen the article about Joakim Noah Road. While I don't necessarily think naming a road after Mr. Noah is the best thing in the world, UF has had worse ideas. Namely, Gale Lemerand Drive. Seriously, I have said it before, but this man did nothing for our school. He already has a building named after him, but he needed a freaking road as well?

In a Gainesville Sun article, they outline some of the hurdles.

---Police and Fire Departments would have to change all addresses on the road (no biggie).

---Convince the University and a Faculty Committee it is a worthy endeavor. (Hmmm, we can name anything after huge donors, but nothing after a student).

---Pass muster with the Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, and State Legistlature because well, Noah is still living. Hmm, Gale Lemerand is still living, what's the difference? As is Riker, Pugh, and McGuire (some of the most recent buildings on campus) shouldn't be that hard.

Now do I really take this campaign seriously? Not really, but I applaud the mastermind, Zach Huddleston. Seriously, I really do. This is one of those small things that UF can do that would make UF students realize that we matter. Perhaps, instead of Noah it should be Gator Boyz Road (as it was a team effort) or something.

Oh, on a somewhat serious note, can Stadium Drive be renamed Mr. 2 Bits Lane? Seriously, I mean at least he has done something for UF, even if it is only 6 days a year. He brings more hope, joy, and entertainment to UF Fans then Gale Lemerand does.

Oh just to further prove why Gale Lemerand is evil. He also has an auditorum named after him at Emry-Riddle, and a Center at Daytona Beach Community College. The man just randomly gives money to universities. This man must be stopped.

  • Can you please explain why Joakim Noah deserves a road named after him?? Last time I checked there wasn't Steve Spurrier Ave or Danny Wuerffel Drive?? Moreover, I think every member on the '06 team would tell you, including Donovan himself, our National Championship wasn't because of J. Noah alone. It was about "team basketball..."

And the students really wonder why the administration and alumni associations don't take them seriously...

Maybe, just maybe-- think of some kind of tribute to both the '96 championship and the '06 and go from there. But naming a road after one player on a Cinderella run to the championship game doesn't seem to fit the bill.

  • I agree anon... like I said, but look at the hurdles that the university set forth though... are any of them really more difficult for Noah (or any player/student/club) than for Gale Lemerand?

I would suggest that Noah and the team did more to bring about donations and pride to UF than Gale Lemerand's donation...

But naming a road after one rich guy, who happen to be sucked up to for long enough doesn't seem to fit the bill either. I would have no problem with famous alumni getting buildings named after them, Dr. Cade, Stephen Spurrier, and Senator Graham come to mind

I would agree with the idea of something after both teams (BTW Spurrier is upset that most of the starters from the 96 team are not coming to the reunion this season). Some schools change the speed limit to a famous players number.

As for the alumni and UF not taking us seriously, they never do on anything, no matter how realistic students are. For years, UF SG/AASU has struggled to get an Asian American Culture Director with little answers from the university. AASU went about it as professionally as possible (no gimmicks needed), but the university's answer is always we are looking into it or they play a if we do that for you then, the other minority communities will suffer to make sure the other communities don't support it.

No UF sadly knows that they can continue to ignore us, because there are thousands of people waiting for that spot
