CITF Funds

So, I wanted to talk a bit about the CITF Funds a bit. These are funds that come every few 3-5 years available for campus improvements. Normally, they are spent on big ticket improvements and have helped fund several advances in the Reitz Union.

Last year,
Joey G moved about 1.5 million dollars (probably under pressure from UF Administration from the Bandshell to the Reitz Union). I generally think this was a bad move. Our student union continues to be a good state and I don't necessarily think the use of 1.5 million is necessary there. But I am willing to live with it. What I can't understand is that we are almost a year later and there are still no actual plans for the use of the money.

Of course there has been talk of updating the Rion Ballroom, updating the 3rd floor, and giving infrastructure changes that are necessary, but will no plans.

Meanwhile, the bandshell still waits... and waits... and waits... for something. Don't get me wrong, safety first and all. I completely understand and nor do I want UF or SG to throw money at something with no purpose. But, can it really cost 1.5 million dollars just rebuild a permanent stage and a roof for starters. Let's worry about everything else that is need much later. We don't need the huge bathrooms and technical equipment yet, let's get the outdoor stage and roof set.

I don't know, I enjoy seeing these outdoor shows and wish SGP did more of them instead of the O'Dome.

Oh well... enjoy the 4th.

  • The most ironic part of all this bandshell business - UF/City of Gainesville just used it again for the annual Fanfares and Fireworks performance.

So are we to gather that it is safer to use by the older and slightly more rotund performers of the City than it is for students?

The University of Florida is in Gainesville. It's Hypocrisy Nation is everywhere.

  • "While the event was cleared to perform at the Bandshell this year,[Assistant Director of the O'Dome Jeff] Chenery said future events are unlikely without substantial repairs or an outright replacement. An engineering firm's study raised questions about the stability of the structure's roof and stage, he said."

Like I said, I don't doubt there probably are safety issues. I just see how expensive it is to put a temporary solid stage and a temporary roof. Perhaps our lobbying director can use the windfall of City of Gainesville's budget to move some money towards such a wonderful thing.

  • Sorry, I removed my own post because I wanted to revise it!

I'd like to see some CITF funds dedicated to Baby Gator. It's designated in our statutes that the program should receive help from CITF. Their biggest need is more space. Their waiting lists are huge because the space near Corry Village is full! A child-care facility somewhere in the vicinity of the Reitz or Turlington would be great! I know CITF is money, and not space, but should a usable site be found, the money could be used to make it ready!

    See chapter 580 SBS below:

CHAPTER 580 BABY GATOR EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH CENTER (81 161, 90-163)

580.1 This chapter is designed to establish a high quality Educational Research Center for Child Development funded by revenues from the Capital Improvement Trust Fund.

580.2 The Baby Gator Educational Research Center shall operate in accordance with Florida Statutes 240.531.
